the Brecon Beacons
The Children's Challenge has managed to get exclusive use of the Brecon Beacons Youth Hostel at the foot of Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons for the 2-4th November.
This is not an organised walking event and there are no marshalls, waymarkers and medics etc. There is also no sponsorship requirement. Rather this is an opportunity for Children's Challenge alumni to have exclusive use of a great hostel from which to plan their own trek before reconvening at the hostel for dinner and fireside tales of derring-do.
From the hostel there is a great walk to the summits of Corn Du, Pen y Fan and Cribyn. It may well be that a large contingent fancy this but there is no predetermined agenda and individuals should only attempt it if they feel comfortable.
Conditions are likely to be challenging so even though potential round trip distances to Pen y Fan and Cribyn at 12km and 15km respectively don't seem excessive, the experience could be far more demanding. The paths are well marked however and there is always the option to turn around if the children feel uncomfortable. To reiterate, the route taken on the day, given these are Welsh mountains in the winter, is entirely at each family's discretion. Individuals will be responsible for their own safety.
No matter how the day unfolds the children will have a memorable adventure in the Welsh mountains and will no doubt have great fun in the hostel both on the Friday and Saturday evenings. There is no victory without a battle.
